The Ashes of November

You might have heard the famous line, “Remember, remember, the fifth of November.”

While it refers to the failed attempt by a group of Catholic men to blow up the House of Parliament and kill the king of England on November 5, 1605, it takes on a whole new meaning in William S. Grant’s Remember, Remember.”

Despite the fact that the night is meant for celebration and bonfires, this book will turn this cozy night into a mysterious evening of darkness, where one life will shatter into millions of pieces—in a way that you could not imagine even in your dreams.

If you think this book will be another take on or telecast of the same thrilling story, you are mistaken. I started this book expecting a thriller, but what I encountered was something far more disturbing. It is a power-packed and chilling read that will transform an ordinary story into a descent into the darkest corners of human nature.

Grant paints a picture of idyllic domesticity, a cozy London home, and a loving couple. But beneath the surface of wine and laughter, a sense of unease simmers. The approaching Guy Fawkes Night celebrations, with their bonfires and fireworks, feel less like a festive occasion and more like a portent of doom when Deanne witnesses the ordeal.

When Deanne walks in the woods with her dog, Smarts, it appears to be a normal, routine walk. But when Smarts vanished into the woods and went silent, it was a masterclass in suspense that Deanne was not prepared for. The familiar path soon transforms into a labyrinth of shadows, and the rustling leaves start to whisper threats. What follows is a scene of unimaginable brutality, a violation so visceral it left Deanne and me reeling in disbelief and shock.

I could not imagine how someone could be so brutal. I was caught off guard when everything happened to Deanne in those seven minutes. I literally was not ready for it. I was not ready for the brutality, the sheer senselessness of the violence and hatred that tore her life apart.

The attacker’s words, laced with hatred and a twisted sense of justification, are chilling in their banality. He is not a monster lurking in the shadows; he is someone who was waiting for Deanne, harboring a deep, festering resentment and hatred toward her.

What struck me most about this book is the way Grant explores the aftermath of trauma. From the beginning of the attack to the slow recovery and the fire of revenge, the book beautifully depicts the cost of survival and reclaiming agency in the face of unimaginable loss. Deanne’s journey is not a straight line. It was a twisted, painful path fraught with setbacks and difficult choices. She’s not a perfect victim, nor is she a flawless avenger. She is a complex, flawed human being attempting to make sense of a world that has been irreversibly shattered.

Moreover, the Guy Fawkes Night celebrations, with their bonfires and fireworks, become a macabre backdrop to Deanne’s ordeal. The joyous spectacle of the crowd, the laughter of children, the sense of community – all of it stands in stark contrast to the darkness that has consumed Deanne’s life once and for all. It’s a chilling reminder of the disconnect between the public face of celebration and the private hell that some people endure.

In the end, “Remember, Remember” is not an easy read. It is disturbing. It is unsettling and can have an impact on your thoughts. But it is a book that will stay with you long after you turn the final page. It is a one-of-a-kind story that delves into the darkest corners of the human psyche and the tenacity of the human spirit—when there is nothing to lose.  It is a book that will make you reconsider your own perceptions of justice, vengeance, and the true meaning of survival and self-discovery when you only have one option: exact revenge and confront the monster that has transformed your life and dreams.

If you enjoy thrillers or are looking for a book to keep you turning the pages, this could be the perfect addition to your library. For more information, purchase, and review, please visit: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D9TWH7H3.
