A Close Encounter With Death

After dinner, Matt told Smarts, their loyal German Shepherd mix, that it was time for his evening walk. Smarts was up in an instant as he wagged his tail and looked eagerly at his master. Deanne, his beautiful wife, decided to join them. Donning their overcoats, the couple headed out, leaving their home behind and stepping into the cool, foggy night.

If was refreshing as they walked arm-in-arm. They let Smarts off his leash once they reached the woods nearby. The dog immediately took off, darting in and out of the trees, sniffing and barking, as though each rustling leaf or darting squirrel held an entire world of intrigue. Deanne noticed a pile of wood in the distance, and they chatted about Guy Fawkes Night, which was only four days away.

She asked Matt to explain the story, recalling vague details about Guy Fawkes attempting to blow up Parliament. As they walked, Matt recited the famous rhyme,Remember, remember, the fifth of November…”—a verse woven into English culture, capturing the intrigue and history behind the night’s bonfire tradition.

After returning home, the couple settled on the couch, with Smarts lying contentedly by the fireside, already drifting to sleep. In this comforting moment, Deanne gently brought up the idea of starting a family. “We’re so lucky,” she said as they mused about the idea of expanding their little family. They talked about how stable their lives had become and how the idea of having a child was beginning to feel right.

The week passed, and soon it was Saturday, November 5th.  Matt and Deanne planned a perfect evening: dinner at Jorge’s Seafood, followed by a trip to the docks for the show.

But Deanne decided to take Smarts out for a quick walk before they left. She slipped into her coat, and as the clock struck 7 p.m., she and Smarts headed for the woods.

As they walked deeper into the woods, Deanne let Smarts off his leash again. Almost immediately, his excited barks turned into a tense, aggressive growl, followed by an eerie silence.

She called for him, expecting his quick return, but heard only a strange yelp in response. An unsettling sense of dread washed over Deanne as she called Smart again and again. But she could hear nothing, only her own voice echoing back. Panic started to creep in, and she reached for her phone, considering calling Matt, but hesitated, telling herself that Smarts would return any second.

With every step she took deeper into the dark woods, her senses heightened. Suddenly, a burst of fireworks briefly illuminated the scene, revealing a crumpled heap ahead. Heart pounding, she rushed forward only to see Smarts lying still, his fur matted with blood. Her beloved companion, usually so full of life, lay motionless and lifeless.

Deanne’s mind raced, torn between fear and a determination to help Smarts. She carefully bent down to inspect his injuries, tears streaming down her face as she whispered soothing words. Her heart ached for Matt, who had no idea of the night’s tragic turn, and as she dialed his number with shaking fingers, she was welcomed by a sudden devastating blow, only to witness a tragic set of events that would transform her life once and for all.
